How does chiropractic work? The three main causes of joint dysfunction (aka subluxation), are mechanical, chemical, and mental/psychological. Mechanical causes are referred to as micro or macro trauma. Micro trauma can also be called repetitive stress injury. Sitting with poor posture at a desk and typing all day, texting and gaming endlessly without a break, carrying a purse or backpack on one shoulder, etc. can cause problems such as carpal tunnel or neck, upper back, or low back pain. Macro trauma refers to pain due to trauma to the body, such as a fall, a break, or a car crash. Chemical stress, another cause of joint dysfunction, effects the body as a whole. Smoking, heavy drinking, drug use, exposure to chemicals and toxic air particles at work or home, and poor diet can create chemical imbalances in the body. In turn this can lead to subluxations as the body aims to compensate and protect itself. Changes or rotation in sacral alignment and tension in the upper back are some of the more common areas affected. Psychological stress can lead to both mechanical and chemical stresses in the body due to tension, poor posture, lack of rest, and poor lifestyle choices. Psychological problems also have been shown to be associated with changes in brain chemistry that directly affect the human frame, such as in fibromyalgia and some types of headaches. The customized care you receive from your chiropractor may help to improve your posture, muscle balance and mobility over time. It can also restore the integrity of your nervous system further and get rid of pain quickly, so you can get back to feeling your best! That's how it works! |
